Throwback Some Sugar

January 26, 2010

Some of you have probably seen ads for Pepsi’s new product, Pepsi Throwback.  The bottle has the retro logo on it, but most significantly, they proudly advertise that it is made with real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup.  Some of you may have heard people talk about Mexican Coca-Cola, and its superiority to its American counterpart for the same reason – it’s made with sugar, not corn syrup.  I was in Mexico last summer and bought a bottle of Coke, and honestly, it did not taste much different – had I drank the Mexican and American versions side by side, maybe I would have noticed a difference.  And that curiosity has led me to undertake the following experiment:  I will buy a bottle of regular Pepsi, a bottle of Pepsi Throwback, and a bottle of Coke.  I will do a blind taste test and see what the differences are, if any.

As an avid fan of Coke and not so much of Pepsi, I once took the “Pepsi challenge” at a baseball stadium, confident I could easily tell Coke and Pepsi apart.  I failed.  So I will use this test as a way to sharpen my taste buds and, of course, impart my gravely important findings unto you, my adoring readers.  So make sure you stay tuned for Thursday’s post.  The classic old joke:  How do you keep a turkey in suspense?  I’ll tell you Thursday.  Ha ha ha.

  1. Eric, my boss didn’t believe I could tell the difference between Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi so he brought me 2 paper cups and he was amazed that I immediately could tell the difference. I will only drink Diet Pepsi in a restaurant if they serve it with fresh lemon to hide the taste.
