Oven + Cheese = Yummy

Feta psiti, or baked Feta cheese, was recently brought to our attention by MHK reader Darren, who had it at a Greek restaurant over the holidays.  He suggested we try making it, and we are glad we did.  But we are a little disheartened that we hadn’t thought of this ourselves at some point.  It’s a no-brainer, really.  Put a block of Feta in the oven with a little seasoning, heat it up, and then eat it.  Genius.  Don’t hold back on the crushed red pepper – the saltiness of the cheese is a perfect match, and it won’t be too spicy.  Other versions of the dish include sliced tomatoes and bell peppers on top as well, so feel free to try that out.  We served it with pita bread, but using crusty bread or even crackers would be delicious.  This super easy dish is sure to impress guests as an appetizer.  Enjoy!

Baked Feta Cheese (Feta psiti)

(serves 4 as an appetizer)

8 oz. block Feta cheese

1 tbsp. olive oil

1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes

½ tsp. oregano

¼ tsp. lemon juice

Heat oven to 350.  Drizzle a little olive oil on a baking pan, place the Feta on top, then drizzle the rest of the oil over the cheese.  Coat the top of the Feta with the red pepper flakes, then sprinkle the oregano over.  Bake for 15 minutes.  Transfer to serving plate, sprinkle with lemon juice.  Eat!

  1. I think I would put pesto on it! Then again I want to put pesto on just about everything in the kitchen!
